Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salt) is a chemical compound, a salt with the formula MgSO4, consisting of magnesium cations Mg (20.19% by mass) and sulphate anions SO2−4. The most common is the heptahydrate MgSO4·7H2O, known as Epsom salt.

The main use of Magnesium Sulphate is in agriculture, to increase magnesium (an essential plant nutrient) or sulphur content in soil. It is most applied to potted plants, or to magnesium-hungry crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, peppers and lemons.

The advantage of Magnesium Sulphate over other magnesium soil is its high solubility which also allows the option of foliar feeding. In addition, it is nearly pH neutral and thus does not significantly change soils pH.

Contrary to popular belief, Magnesium Sulphate does none of the purported claims except for correcting magnesium deficiency in soils.
